2 Canadians missing after Lisbon funicular crash, GAC says – National


Two Canadian citizens are missing after a popular 19th-century streetcar crashed in Portugal’s capital on Wednesday, killing at least 16 people, Global Affairs Canada said in a statement.

“Global Affairs Canada (GAC) is aware of the funicular derailment in Lisbon and extends its deepest sympathies to all those affected. Global Affairs Canada is aware of two missing Canadian citizens in Lisbon, Portugal,” GAC said in response to a query from Global News.

At least 16 people died in the wreck, with another 21 injured.

The head of Lisbon’s Civil Protection Agency told reporters one person from Canada was injured, along with passengers from seven other countries.

Canadian consular officials are in contact with local authorities to gather more information, GAC told Global News.

“Due to privacy considerations, no further information can be disclosed,” the statement added.

Portugal observed a national day of mourning Thursday after the capital’s worst disaster in recent history.

The streetcar, a popular tourist attraction, carries passengers up and down one of the city’s steep hills, past picturesque views.
